We primarily use Fast ForWord software which is engaging for children, with a computer game feel.  It adjusts to the child's level so they feel challenged but successful.  We add to the experience with Gemm City, our on-line social network, and Dyslexia reading help for K-12, mth help for childrenThe Token Store where daily points translate into prizes.  At home you are able to work on your own schedule and our centers in Westchester, NY and in CT work on a drop in basis, i.e., no appointments needed.

Tutoring is often drier -- have you seen the word lists! -- and because it is working around the learning difficulties children are required to work directly on the skills they most dislike, mainly because it is where they struggle.  We work on cognitive skills in a fun way and adaptive, no word lists, no reading torture.

 

Enduring Gains

We are a learning intervention service, aiming to be a one-time shot, no follow-ups or boosters required.    Our programs build cognitive skills that are then used all day every day in listening and learning and so they stay strong.  They are now part of the child.  Many students will see continuing gains at an accelerated rate as higher level thinking and reasoning skills, held back by the learning glitches we work on, are able to develop more normally.  Take a look at this study.  

Tutors are normally able to show gains after a few months -- an extra 10-20% of instruction does help -- but often, once tutoring stops the child will slowly start to fall behind again.

 

Individualized Programs

Gemm learning offers programs that build fundamental cognitive skills combined with direct reading or math instruction.  After the initial assessment we develop an individualized protocol for every child,   The programs themselves are adaptive -- the child works through the material at their own pace.  This is not only great for confidence -- the child is never stumped or frustrated -- but it is also efficient as children work only on their specific weaknesses.

Most tutoring is not individualized.  In a center teachers work with three of more students and typically work from standardized workbooks, monolithic, not unlike the schools.  One on one tutoring at home offers the opportunity for individualized instruction, but most often this opportunity is wasted as tutors either review instruction in school material or work through standard material developed by their tutoring firm.
